Is it possible to ski on champagne? In Aspen, Colorado it seems to be, because nowhere in the world is there better powder snow than in the vast expanses of the Rocky Mountains. Even if there is no jagged mountain scenery like in the Alps, the mighty mountain ridges of the Elkcamp or Aspen Mountain represent a huge phenomenon and make a skier’s dream come true. Between mighty Douglas fir trees, you descend over deserted slopes into the valley to the two luxury ski resorts Snowmass and Aspen. A completely new domicile among the star hotels is the Limelight Hotel in Snowmass, which opened its doors in December 2018 and offers a real ski-in/ski-out experience.
The rooms are modern and elegantly furnished, as you would expect from a Limelight. Due to the enclosed ceiling, they look much larger and you feel right at home, which is of course also due to the cosy sitting area with sofa, armchair and felt stool. There is a small kitchenette with refrigerator, a cool bathroom with shower tray and double washbasin as well as an ultramodern TV screen including high-speed internet.
First of all: The breakfast in the Limelight is really great, because there are awesome scrambled eggs, bacon, waffles and cereals in all variations. Coffee and orange juice are also available as long as you’re thirsty. In the evening, so-called beer dinners in the form of delicious pizza slices await the hungry skier who doesn’t want to drive into Downtown Aspen anymore.
Casual, modern and cool, with a pinch of live music. This is how you can imagine the afternoon at the Limelight Snowmass, because while you order the Sundowner beer and shake the last snow off your ski jacket, the first guests are already sitting around the crackling fireplace listening to the sounds of a band. That’s the Wild West feeling that we love and certainly don’t get served in the Alps.
It is actually impossible to lift a slope out of 96 perfectly groomed runs in Snowmass, because something like an overall feeling is created. And while Aspen Mountain, Ajax for short, is more for advanced skiers, Aspen Highlands is reserved for experts and Buttermilk is the family paradise, Snowmass could be described as the big allrounder among Aspen ski resorts. A highlight is certainly the 8.5 km long mogul run „Long Shot“ which leads through the woods at Burnt Mountain and has to be climbed on foot, because the entrance is not close to the lift. But on days with fresh snow there’s the real Champagne Powder feeling, which can’t be compared to anything in the world.
If you want to go skiing in Snowmass, the Limelight is the right place for you. In the middle of town, right next to the ice rink, you’ll find yourself in the heated outdoor jacuzzi and you’ll be happy not to have to leave this place in the first place. Even though Aspen has many great restaurants and shops, as you can read in my article about skiing in Snowmass.
